SodiumStar for the Subaru Telescope

Successful laser verification at Subaru

Trips to Hawaii do not get boring, so we were thrilled to be back for another laser installation, this time at the Japanese Subaru telescope. The name Subaru is Japanese for the Pleiades and has nothing to do with the car manufacturer. Subaru is the 8.2-meter flagship telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, located at the Mauna Kea Observatory on the Big Island. However, installation took place at Subaru headquarters in Hilo due to the lack of beam relay and launching infrastructure at the telescope. Thanks to the great team at Subaru for this productive week. Visiting Hilo during the Kilauea eruption was a fascinating experience for us. Looking forward to coming back for ULTIMATE-START and ULTIMATE-Subaru upgrades.
