Congratulations to ESO for reaching the highest point of the ELT dome construction! 🔠Over 60% completed – a huge milestone for science and engineering. We were honoured to be invited to the festivities at ESO’s headquarter in Garching just outside Munich, Germany.
The event celebrated the successful installation of the highest steel strut of the ELT dome structure and included a live link to Chile, where the Chilean flag and ESO’s flag were hoisted on top of the telescope.
Once completed, ESO’s ELT (extremely large telescope), will be a unique tool for astronomers to observe our universe. With all ELT instruments making use of a technology called adaptive optics, that allows ground based astronomical telescopes to compensate for the detrimental effects of the atmosphere on imaging systems, the ELT will rely heavily on guide star lasers to create artificial reference ‘stars’.
We are very proud to support this journey by providing these guide star lasers, our SodiumStar system, bringing cutting-edge laser technology to the world’s most powerful telescope. 🚀
Learn more about the ELT roofing ceremony in ESO’s press release. We recently delivered the final guide star laser system for the ELT, find out more in our news post.
