On-sky campaign in La Palma

Together with ESO we performed on-sky tests of new technologies to boost the efficiency of laser excitation of atmospheric sodium atoms. For these experiments we are using the experimental “Wendelstein” Laser Guide Star Unit built by ESO with support from TOPTICA and MPBC. It is now located in a container next to the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, Canaries.

Apart from a tough schedule with busy nights out in the cold plus lots to optimize during the days, we’ve had a great time with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful sunsets and sunrises. It’s a huge priviledge to live and work in such a fascinating place for a few days.
